             Little Chapel on the Boardwalk

                             Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina

Committee Description

Congregational Care Committee

The mission of the Congregational Care Committee is to make sure
that each and every member of the Little Chapel feels cared for
spiritually and emotionally. Furthermore, the Committee seeks to make
every new member feel welcome in the church. This committee offers
opportunities for church members to serve and care for each other
through programs such as the Friendship Ministry and volunteer
visitation. In addition, the Congregational Care Committee sponsors
classes and special seminars on topics such as grief, death and dying,
and aging in ourselves and others.

Current Month's Activities

Looking For Friendly, Welcoming People!

Your Congregational Care Committee is looking for some church members who would be willing to “adopt” a new member or new member family and help them to become involved at the Little Chapel. We are hoping that some of you will call the church office (256-2819) and volunteer for this very needed ministry.

Once people have decided to join our church family, it would help them so much for some nice someone to call them and invite them to a Circle meeting or Sunday school class, ask them to have breakfast with them on a LC breakfast Sunday, go to a men’s supper, or to any of the many activities we have here at our church. It is not an easy thing to walk into a room full of strangers, and just knowing one person can make all the difference.

Please consider sharing your friendly self with someone new to the Little Chapel and call Karen and volunteer.

Please call the church office at 256-2819 whenever you know of someone in our church family who is in the hospital or is ill at home so that they can be contacted.

A Final Gift

We spend a lifetime loving our family and one of the ways we show that love is by the giving gifts. While it may seem like an awkward topic, you can make preparation to give a final gift to your family by filling out a form that specifies what you wish to be included in your funeral and/or memorial service (hymns, scriptures, special music, etc.) Your family will then have the peace of mind of knowing that they are doing exactly what you wanted.

Forms are available on the shelf outside the church office. When you’re done, seal it in an envelope, put your name on the outside and return it to the church office. We’ll file it for the future.

Drivers Needed!

We have several homebound members who would love to come to church service on a Sunday morning. Although they are able to do this, they have no way of getting to the Little Chapel. If you would be willing to pick up one of these people and bring them to church now and then, you would be doing a very wonderful thing for them.

Please call Karen (256-2819) and put your name on this volunteer list. We will call you occasionally and find a Sunday convenient for you to brighten someone’s day by driving them to church for worship. As an added bonus, anyone who drives one of our homebound people to church will have a *RESERVED PARKING SPOT* on that Sunday very near the front door!

Prayer Requests

I am sure you have seen in the church bulletin the notice of a Tuesday Prayer Group which meets from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.     This is a group which recognizes the admonition in the Bible to WORRY about nothing and PRAY about everything!!!  Hard to do, but God’s line is never busy; and I assure you he’s heard it all before.

Now, thanks to Jean Hill, we have a new fixture.  On the table in the narthex, is a lovely red “Prayer Request Box” along with cards and a pencil.  We hope you will avail yourself of opportunities to have our group pray for your needs or your thanks.

We would love to have you join us any Tuesday.  You will be glad you did!!

Carenotes Available in Library

If you haven’t taken a look at the Carenotes display in the library recently, you may be missing something!  Carenotes are designed to be portable, and we encourage anyone who needs them to take one…or several.  Particularly if you have a friend who might need a simple expression of love and support, we hope that you will keep Carenotes in mind.

Introduction to Elderhaus

Elderhaus is a nonprofit organization which provides an alternative to inappropriate nursing home care for adults.  The program seeks to enable an individual to remain in the community and home setting, all while providing health care, supervision, restorative services, therapeutic recreation, and socialization.  Elderhaus also provides a respite for family members from their constant caring roles, enabling them to be gainfully employed during the day.  For any further information about the Elderhaus Adult Day Care services or Weekend Retreats, please contact Elderhaus at 910-343-8209.

New Hospital Confidentiality Regulations in Effect

Recently, the hospitals of the New Hanover Health Network have instituted patient confidentiality regulations at both New Hanover Regional Medical Center and Cape Fear Memorial Hospital.  These new regulations seek to further protect the patients’ privacy and confidential information, but they also make it a bit more difficult to know who is in the hospital.  It is now even more important that you contact the church if you or someone in your family becomes hospitalized or goes in for surgery.  The church staff is dependent upon you to know this information.  We want to make sure that all members and friends of the Little Chapel are well cared-for in times of crisis.  Letting the church know when you or someone you know is hospitalized is an important step in assuring that this will happen.

Presbyterian Counseling Center

Much has been happening with the Presbyterian Counseling Center.

Using a grant received from the Cape Fear Memorial Foundation, the Center has opened satellite offices in Shallotte and Southport. The Shallotte office is located at the Shallotte Presbyterian Church and the Southport office is located at St. Philip’s Episcopal Church in Southport. These two churches have generously provided office space for the Center.

The Center has also hired Jonathan R. Kelley, D.Min., as a new staff psychotherapist. Jonathan rotates between the two satellite offices and the office on Wrightsville Avenue in Wilmington.

Ann Thacker, who has been with the Counseling Center for some time, has received her accreditation as a Licensed Professional Counselor. This enables many of their clients to use their own medical insurance plan.

George Slaton, Director of the Center, was recognized by the Center’s Board recently for his 25 years of service to PCC.

In June of 2005, the basic counseling fee was increased from $75 to $90. This fee still remains well below the prevailing rates in the community. The Center continues to work with clients and negotiates reduced fees depending on circumstances.

The Presbyterian Counseling Center (PCC) provides a ministry of counseling which combines the practice of psychotherapy with the church’s traditional pastoral care for all people in distress and regardless of denominational or religious affiliation. The Little Chapel continues to help to support this very valuable ministry in our community.

There is printed information about the Counseling Center located in a small display in our church library. Please just walk in and pick up whatever informative brochures you might like to read.

If you have any questions, or if I can be of any help to you, please call me .

Susan Long is the Advocate for the Center from the Little Chapel.

Centerpoint column is provided by the Presbyterian Counseling Center of Wilmington. You may call the Center at presbyteriancounselingcenter.org.
