Brief Church Mission Statement: Please limit your response to no more than 1500 characters including spaces and punctuation. The Little Chapel With A Big Heart! A Heart growing in love and commitment to God through spiritual growth generated by prayer, by a meaningful worship experience that strengthens us to carry our faith into our everyday life and out into the world, and by being a part of a caring community of Christians.
A Heart growing in love and commitment to God’s people in the church by educating members about God’s promises, fellowshipping with one another, as well as supporting and caring for those in need within the church.
A Heart growing in love and commitment to God’s work in the world through active ministries involving all age groups, in outreach to our larger community, and in support of mission projects and missionaries in other parts of the world.
Narrative Questions: For each narrative question, please limit your responses to no more than 1500 characters including spaces and punctuation. Please write a brief description of your church/organization programs or accomplishments. The Little Chapel was established in 1907 as a summer church for members of two larger Wilmington churches. In 1952, 43 charter members began worship at our present location as a Presbyterian Church. Since that time we have grown to a vibrant church of over 600 members of all ages. We conduct two Sunday morning services and provide various weekly bible studies and fellowship opportunities. Within the past year we have added a new Senior Pastor and a new Administrative Assistant.
We have adopted the unicameral government through our session which oversees a number of committees. These committees provide unique programs such as: Cookie Patrol (to welcome new visitors); Second Loaf (gathers food from departing vacationers to feed the hungry); a dynamic PYC and a new PKC (Presbyterian Kids Connection); Meals on Wheels; a Women’s Prison Ministry; an Inner City Ministry for the indigent; Habitat for Humanity and a Mother’s Morning Out program. As true Presbyterians, who enjoy good food and fellowship, we gather once a month for a southern breakfast!
For
further information about the Little Chapel please go to our website
www.littlechapel.org The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk has the ability, with God’s help to accomplish anything. We are blessed with a congregation that firmly believes in the power of prayer. Being determined, loving people of many talents, we are willing to do what it takes to meet the needs of our church and community. The Christian message is taught through Sunday School classes, a welcoming nature, and a willingness to reach out to strangers with a helping hand. Others have a real commitment to mission and service opportunities such as Habitat for Humanity, Tileston Ministries, the Salvation Army and our annual mission trip to Mexico, to name a few. We are also fortunate to have those whose gifts go more toward the organizational and financial responsibilities of running a church in an efficient and effective way. Music is a gift which has been given to many of us, heard through our hand bell choirs and our adult, youth and children’s choirs. Our people are blessed with many gifts, all of which contribute to doing God’s work in this world.
What are the key theological issues of our church and society that are reflected in the ministry of your congregation/organization? Assimilation of New Members: We are proud of the harmonious nature of our congregation. Many families and individuals are attracted to our congregation by our diverse programs and the welcoming nature of the Little Chapel. Continued program development is needed to meet the varied spiritual needs of new members and to integrate them into our whole church family, both as worshipers and as participants in our mission.
Managing Growth: The church has doubled in size over the last 18 years and may grow another 50% in the next 10 years. Growth would require more parking, larger fellowship space, possibly 3 services, and more full time staff. Beyond these logistical issues we need to address how we handle this growth and still remain the “Little Chapel With a Big Heart.” Our goal is to retain our sense of warm Christian fellowship and continue to provide a caring community in which everyone feels valued and has the opportunity to grow in their faith journey.
Mission/Outreach: The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk was created as a mission to beachgoers, and has grown into a larger community church, with most new members coming from outside Wrightsville Beach. The original mission continues as we welcome vacationers throughout the year. We are comfortable with this dual identity. Our continuing goal is to take advantage of opportunities to reach beyond our doors, into our greater community to share the blessings of God’s love, not only in word but in deed.
