Food and Fellowship Committee
Little Chapel on the Boardwalk
The Little Chapel on the Boardwalk will begin the 7th season of its summer food collection ministry on the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. The 2nd Loaf ministry is being coordinated by Kellie Henry, Ann Martz, and Ellen Dudley. The purpose of the ministry is to give visitors, local community members, and businesses a chance to help local, needy families by donating food, supplies, and other useful items. Everything collected will be sent to the Good Shepherd Ministry’s soup kitchen, and its Second Helpings program for local, needy families. The collection tent will be set up on the sidewalk in front of the church’s parking lot from 9 a.m. – noon every Saturday from May 26th until Labor Day.
The ministry accepts non-perishable as well as most perishable foods, with the exception of opened dairy products. Past donations have shown how generous residents and vacationers can be. Last year, over 3000 pounds of food and many useful items were delivered to the Good Shepherd Ministry’s soup kitchen. Plus the cash donations were used to purchase special items requested by the soup kitchen director.
The collection tent will be manned by volunteers from the church each week. The volunteers include children and their parents, youth, and adults from the congregation. They will provide sunscreen and cold water for the residents, tourists, and Loop walkers while accepting donations. Dog treats and a “doggy cool-off pool” will also be available for canine friends.
In addition to Saturday mornings, donated items may also be dropped off at the church office Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. – noon and from 2-4 p.m. On Mondays, volunteers deliver the collected food items to Good Shepherd Ministry.
